Bruno Cell

Making cultured meat an accessible resource

What Cultured Meat is

Cultured meat is made from animal cells grown in controlled environments called bioreactors. These cells multiply and are then harvested to produce meat products such as hamburgers and other familiar formats.

Compared to conventional meat, cultured meat could:

  • Drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Eliminate the need for land use and deforestation
  • Have a lower impact on water and other natural resources
  • Spare animals from cruel treatments
  • Provide food free from dangerous pathogens
  • Do not require the use of antibiotics

Although many companies around the world are actively working on cultured meat, it is not yet available to a wide public due to the high cost of cell cultivation.

Our Goal

Founded in 2019 through a collaboration between academic researchers and a private investor from the food industry, Bruno Cell is the first Italian startup entirely dedicated to cultured meat.

Our mission is to make cultured meat economically sustainable by reducing the high costs associated with cell proliferation. To achieve this, we fund and manage research projects aimed at building proprietary know-how and developing patented, optimized proliferation processes.

Work with Us

Bruno Cell supports a range of research activities, such as PhD programs and three-year research projects focused on cultured meat, carried out in collaboration with various Italian universities.

We are looking for motivated and proactive PhD candidates interested in building a long-term research partnership.
Prior experience with culture of myogenic and/or pluripotent cells or bioprinting techniques is appreciated, but not required.

Why Bruno?

The name Bruno Cell is a tribute to the 16th-century Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno, who boldly challenged the dominant views of his time by promoting ideas such as the infinity of the universe and cosmic pluralism.

In his writings, he also expressed proto-antispeciesist views, envisioning a world in which killing animals for food would be met with social disapproval.

His statue in the center of Rome, surrounded by other great thinkers, stands as a symbol of intellectual freedom.

Bruno’s determination to challenge established paradigms continues to inspire our work and vision.

Bruno Cell is part of FEASTS, a project funded by the European Union that involves 36 partners with the aim of establishing the foundations for the ethical, sustainable and cost-competitive development of cultured meat and cultured fish.

Bruno Cell is developing technologies for applications in the field of cultured meat.

We have the “PeriPig” pork cell line available and a patent that optimizes muscle differentiation.
